Weekend Post: Read, Eat, Listen, Do #4
READ. #GIRLBOSS. I'd has this book in my mind for a while and finally picked it up when I had a week off work - it's a very comfortable book to read in the sense it takes no time at all to get into it, I take it to work and read a chapter a lunch-break. #GIRLBOSS is actually a very empowering read and is incredibly relateable particularly if you're of the generation Y and are trying to stumble your way through your twenties (which I am heading into rather rapidly...23 in two months eeek). Sophia is the founder of Nasty Gal - an online clothing store that's grown to crazy proportions in just a few weeks and she challenges a lot of ideas that feel pretty set in stone and expected of our generation. It's a very inspiring read all round and makes me really want to get my ass into gear.
EAT. I haven't been eating any one thing in particular a hell of a lot but I have been going out a lot more frequently - this weekend I went to Tyler Street Garage for dinner on Valentines day. It turns into a club later at night and is situated right on the waterfront - if you're in Auckland it's a very popular destination for twenty-somethings. The food was really good and the atmosphere is great too (then again might just have been all the happy couples that seemed to fill the city that night...)
LISTEN. Muse has recently made a re-appearance on my "Recently Played" playlist - I forgot how much I loved them until recently and have been playing a lot of their songs on repeat. In particular I love Plug in Baby, Starlight, Neutron Star Collision, Hoodoo, Nights of Cydonia and Time is Running Out.
DO. My nails - oh god my nails. They haven't looked so bird-of-prey in a long time (since I got shellac months ago). I bought them online when they were on sale to try them out - I've been dubious of acrylic nails as I've heard horror stories of what they can do to your nails. However - these ones from NailHur claimed to be OK to re-use and weren't damaging to your nails. Suffice to say I am in love - I've already ordered three more sets. They come in different shapes and sizes and designs. I'll definitely be doing a full review of these at some stage in the near future.

Weekend Post: Read, Eat, Listen, Do #3
READ. I think I may have mentioned this year I'm trying to read a wider variety of books - I usually stick to the same kind all the time. I picked three that sounded good from Book Depository and clicked add to cart. This is the first of the three - I had a look through a few by this author and apparently this is the one that made Haruki Murakami a well known name worldwide. It's definitely pretty enthralling - it took me a few chapters to get into but I finished it in four days once I'd started. For me I struggled a little in the sense that the cultural background and setting for this is incredibly different to what I'm used to but it also added something new that kept me coming back. It's one of those books I almost find difficult to explain without really giving too much away but it has some really poignant bits that really stuck with me and I think would be relatable to most people in their twenties.
EAT. Stone fruit. Ahh summer, the time I can eat copious amounts of cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums. Need I say more?
LISTEN. I'm always listening to Lana at the moment (what's new) but I've added a few "older" bits. I'm one of those people who listens compulsively to things until I'm sick of them. Track currently on repeat is Bittersweet by Blu Cantrell and Sean Paul. It's actually quite good to be listening to while writing - which is exactly what this weekend will be filled with as I'm super behind with my drafting...thankfully the New Zealand weather is beautiful, I have a week off and my camera is primed and ready for a photo taking frenzy.
DO. I've been having a lot of makeup free days lately. The summer means my skin gets more sun and air than usual and I don't have that ghastly pallor I get in the winter that makes me look like I've died overnight and re-animated myself in the morning. This combined with a few new skin-care additions has meant my face has really cleared up - aside from the unavoidable hormonal breakouts everything is looking and feeling a lot more healthy. This combined with freshly tinted brows and lashes means I can go out quite comfortably with nothing at all on my face.
Right, time to crack on with some more photos - updated skin care and hair care coming soon.

Weekend Post: Read, Eat, Listen, Do
READ. I'm always reading something and this week I finished reading You Are Here by Thich Nhat Hanh. I've had this book for a while but as it's not a "story" as such it took me a while to get really into it. What with it being a new year and all that I finally sat down in a quiet place in the bush near where I live - it seemed a more fitting location than the lounge. Essentially this book tries to communicate how to effectively reduce stress in your life, deal with your problems and appreciate right now. A lot of people (myself included) seem to always be hanging out for the next weekend or event or party. When you think about it this way, five sevenths of your life you'll be wishing it was a different day. This book also gives you advice on how to control your own mind and emotions rather than ignoring them which again a lot of people have a tendency to do. The breathing technique discussed in You Are Here is actually fantastic - it calms your mind totally as your entire focus is exclusively on your breath. I have a tendency to hyperventilate and the practice has helped with that - it's also great for when I'm at the gym as when you focus on breathing alone your body can actually push harder than usual - something like your mind gives up before your body will and when your mind is totally controlled your body is free (wow I'm so deep). Anyway - bit of a different one for me but if you're interested in this sort of thing it's a great read, it's not overly preachy (it is written by a Buddhist monk) and is quite a refreshing change from the usual fantasy/autobiographical/thriller novels that are so popular (and what I usually read).
EAT. Blueberries. I can't get enough of these things and I get through a punnet every day. They're so good for you, make me feel really healthy (especially when I have them with a cup of green tea every morning at work) and now it's finally warm and sunny taste fantastic. I consume these year round - in winter I just substitute for frozen ones in smoothies (which, to be fair, I have every day in summer as well...). You can see one of my smoothie recipes here.
LISTEN. I've been a bit all over the place with my music at the moment but recently I've been listening to Lana Del Reys Born To Die quite often - in particular Burning Desire, Blue Jeans and Without You. If I'm feeling like a soppy bitch she's amazing - her voice is one that literally gives me goosebumps and I love listening to her on long drives home when I've been out. Otherwise my favourite song is actually I Need Your Love - been around a while but I feel like I'm only just appreciating it now and it's one of those ones that somehow sounds better with summer weather...does anyone else know what I mean by that?
DO. A big skincare binge. Post-new years I abused my skin a bit with too many drinks and too much sun. My poor face was an unhappy mess so I've had a makeup free week (shock horror, mascara and filled in brows only). And have been slathering my face in oils and creams and it's looking far better. Naturally in the kiwi sun skin damage is pretty likely, I've already got a handful of new freckles gracing my cheeks and nose. I've just purchased this gorgeous Mecca Skincare SPF lotion - it's gorgeous and light and creates a physical barrier with titanium dioxide rather than chemical. For sensitive faces I think it'll be a dream - part of the reason my face reacted so badly last time I think is it doesn't like sunscreen chemicals. I'll let you know how it fares when I take it for a test drive! I think an updated skincare routine may well be in order soon as I've added a few little gems to my arsenal. Today I picked up an utterly edible smelling facemask from Lush for free (gotta love dat black pot policy) - Oatifix to hydrate and soothe it further. I'm also treating my hair with a hair oil as I type - perhaps a summer hair care post is overdue as well?
I've got three new books on their way in the post as we speak so no doubt there'll be another post of this nature soon. What's the preference? I feel like I like doing these posts more than conventional "what I did this weekend" posts personally.

Weekend Post: The New Year
This weekend was a long one - beautifully stretched out and sunny as well for that matter. Unfortunately I don't have many photos to show for it (thanks for that S4 - the screen froze and totally let me down). However I will say it started on New Years Eve when I got to head out from work early, get ready then head out. I had an amazing night and actually started on one of my resolutions which was to actually get out more - living where I live lends itself far too easily to becoming a social leper and it's not a behaviour I want to encourage when I'm only twenty-two.
It's Sunday as I'm writing this - I was planning on seeing a friend for a beach day but I think I'm still too frazzled from Friday in the sun and the traffic heading back into the city means it's safest to hole up at home with a book. I did just that and went into the bush right next to my house - I've loved that little patch for as long as I can remember. It's a lot more overgrown than it ever used to be but it's still a lovely quiet spot for when you need to get away from the wifi, computer and people. I took a book to read and my Moleskin diary to plan a few more blog ideas for this year. Watch this space.
The picture above I love especially - if you look carefully you can just see the bridge that crosses the river. So close to civilisation as it were and yet you can barely see it. The street I live on is in the country and definitely one of those places that would be overgrown within a matter of years of people disappeared.
To those who have never been to New Zealand - the above tree is a pohutukawa. So lovely being able to lie under them at the beach. The red flowers bloom over Christmas (and drop little fluffy things on you if you spend too much time underneath them).
The photo that started the weekend - the fireworks were actually pretty decent this year. Was a lovely clear night and pretty warm too, especially considering new years eve has been rubbish weather for the last few years.
I can't wait to get into the year - I have a lot of plans for it and a lot of new goals as well. Keen to crack on with my blog and make it a bit more personal and only post things I'm happy with. Plans to travel are brewing as well - and thankfully my goal to get out more is already paying off. My 2014 round up is here if you want to read something more in depth.
New post will be up either Wednesday or Friday this week - I expect work is going to be a little frantic to say the least (eeek).

2015
After my wee break from blogging I think I'm feeling more ready to get back into it with new ideas and more energy than I had at the end of last year.
2014 was a bit of a mixed bag, some good and some bad - I think I'll just highlight the good bits. A few really wonderful things happened, I've been working now for a year in my first real full time job. In that I've managed to pull myself up to a higher position with more responsibilities in an area I ultimately want to be in - which is PR and marketing. This year I've been offered the chance to go on a course through work, collaborate with the PR company my work uses and take the reigns on a few more projects. I know it'll be a busy year and full on trying to get everything done but I can't wait.
That aside in the last year I've also met and worked with some of the loveliest people several of which have turned into friendships. It makes going to work something I generally look forward to - everything is much easier when you work with a team as amazing as mine.
I've managed to make, save and spend more money than I've ever had in my life in the last year too. I'm by no means wealthy but learning how to budget more, pay off my car, be able to have that freedom to go out or buy something if I really want to is wonderful.
That reminds me - even having a car and now my license is one of the best things to happen to me in the last few years. Being able to drive to my mates place whenever I feel like it in my own little car with whatever music I want is one of the most liberating things that I never had before. Bit late to the driving party but better late than never right?
This year my resolution was really just to get out more, make the most of my twenties and do what makes me happy. Too much of the time I find myself doing the "sensible" or "right" thing even if it wasn't really what I wanted or what was going to make me really happy. Now I feel OK with leaving a situation if it isn't working, or changing something if it's not quite right. Your twenties are notorious for being that time of your life where you can be selfish - no marriage, kids or mortgage are stopping you from doing what you want. This time only last ten short years and I've already used nearly three of those up (eeek).
In terms of blog goals I think making sure posts are 100% exactly what I want them to be before publishing is going to be a priority. I'm thinking of reducing my posts to once a week for a little while to get back into the swing of it and see how I go. Working full time and trying to keep a blog afloat is definitely a challenge and one that I enjoy - I just don't want it to ever feel like a chore rather than a hobby. I don't want to put a number of followers as a goal - I'm really doing this because it's a creative outlet and something for me to look back on. Seeing comments from people who have enjoyed something I've written is more important to me than numbers.
Can't wait for this year to kick off properly - the last two days have already been amazing and new years eve was probably the best I've had in a long time - fingers crossed it's a sign of what's to come. Happy new years all.

Weekend Post: A Break
I feel like for my weekend post this week I need to address my absence. I've not been blogging for long but I know there are some people who come back and I don't want to seem to have disappeared in a puff of blogger dust. Working full time and blogging whilst trying to maintain some semblance of a social life is proving quite difficult - so ive decided to take a little break.
The last few months have been pretty exhausting, due to work I don't get a hell of a break over Christmas or new years and I think the next week I'll be taking a break from blogging. Lately I've felt like I wasn't making my posts as 100% as they should be and it's felt a little like a chore. I may cut down to one beauty post a week as I think I'd rather do something whole heartedly rather than two things kinda half assed.
I have a lot of exciting plans and opportunities coming up in 2015 and I think I'm bestboff right now saving my energy and get back into doing things the best I can. I'll be back early January once I've had some time to rest, photograph and draft some new posts that I can be proud of.
Until then I'll always be creeping twitter and instagram - so if you want to keep up me the links are in the sidebar.
Hope everyone has a lovely new year and I shall be back soon.

Weekend Post: Now on Monday
The wind-down to Christmas is on eek - I have a lot to get through for work in the next week and a half. I'm certainly looking forward to a few long weekends but in the business I work in it's bound to be a busy time. In the mean time I thought I'd try make myself feel a bit more festive by writing some Christmas cards and *trying* to get some shopping done. I've done a bit more online this year so fingers crossed it all gets to New Zealand in time...!
Smith and Caugheys is one of those special places for me - it's not just a department store, mum has been taking me there every Christmas since I was a child (as long as I can remember really) and it's really the only thing Auckland has that's remotely close to the huge stores in London like Selfridges and John Lewis and the like. It's a beautiful store and going there feels like Christmas, every year they have a unique display in the store windows for the festive season, this year it was "A Pirates 12 Days of Christmas" - this is one of the scenes. All the little figures move, it's magical. I managed to get a few bits for my family while I was there as well.
Shopping always makes me feel a bit peckish - I bought mum and myself a cookie each from Mrs Higgins. They're so delicious - proper cookie texture of crispy around the edges and soft in the middle.
Aside from all that I also finally cut my hair to the length I want - bit of a shock but I love how it turned out. It's been in the back of my mind for the last few months and this weekend was the time. I went to my usual hairdresser and as usual he did exactly what I'd asked for.
I think from now on I'll be posting my weekend posts on a Monday (starting next week obviously...) - just to give myself a bit more time to get the photos sorted and really write something I'm happy with/that might actually be interesting to read. So henceforth I'll have a new post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I don't get a hell of a lot of holiday at all this year so if I get a bit slack we'll face that when we get there.

Weekend Post: Work Christmas Party and Shopping
November was an unbelievable month - I'm quite relived it's over and we're onto the last month of 2014. To kick it off we had the sales team meeting at work and the Christmas party. As I'm a part of the sales team it was a pretty full on week this week! Below is what I wore - absolutely kicking myself for not including the shoes I wore which were my Jeffrey Campbell Litas - I've posted them on instagram before and I'm sure everyone knows what they look like.
Also snaps for me for actually smiling in a photo for once. My makeup was pretty simple really - my base was everything from my dewy skin post earlier this week paired with a Lime Crime Red Velvet Velvetine. I also wore xobeauty lashes - the style I chose was the Romantic.
It was such a fun night - we had a group of drag queens come in and do a cabaret show. Everyone absolutely loved it. If you want to see more of what was there have a look at my instagram - linked in the sidebar.
Due to being a 76 year old woman on the inside/I take as long to recover as one would I needed a decent sleep in on Saturday to make up for an exhausting Friday. Dad and I went into the city for a few things and naturally because we were in Newmarket we couldn't go past Tasca for lunch - I had my new usual which is the tapas plate below. Absolutely delicious and always up to a very high standard. If you're in Auckland I highly recommend going there for a meal.
The rest of the weekend has been pretty quiet and I've just spent it planning posts for next week, pottering in the garden a bit and painting my nails unsuccessfully twice - I just bought some new colours and have decided neither of them suit me *sighing emoji here*

Weekend Post: Read, Eat, Listen, Do
I've been thinking about making a little series like this for a while - something I can use to keep you guys up to date with the non-beauty related stuff I'm into as well. I'll probably do it during weekend where I don't have anything outstandingly exciting to show you and maybe the odd one during the week (amongst beauty posts...).
Anyway, lets carry on!
READ. Jack Reacher - mum lent me this because I hadn't read any of the series and am one of those people who re-read the same series over and over. I've got about a hundred pages in so far and am really enjoying it - it's nice to read something a bit more real-life and gritty.
EAT. I have been eating one metric tonne of avocados weekly seeing as they're so cheap - 4 for 3 dollars at the supermarket don't mind if I do. I love having them on toast every morning with some Marmite and chilli jam. Delicious. I've had it for lunch as well as breakfast today too. Oops. As well as this I've been taking lozenge pro-biotics especially for throat/respiratory immunity as there's a lot of bugs going around at this time of year and I really can't afford to get sick. So far I've managed to stave off the bug that's hit a few people in the office.
LISTEN. Now that I have finally managed to get music sorted on my phone (man I just love this phone) I've added a whole lot of new stuff. At the moment I'm listening to Flawless on repeat (I'm late to the party I know - bear with me). The sound quality on my S4 is amazing - totally obsessed.
DO. Planning some very exciting things for next year which I will talk about closer to the time. In terms of a more superficial level I've been painting my nails orange for summer - I can't get enough of this colour (Hot and Spicy by OPI - was mentioned on a monthly favourite post here). As well as that I've been fake tanning - my legs are about ready to be exposed to the oncoming Kiwi summer. My hands below are a typical example of how bad I am at tanning fingers. Don't you just love my new Meadowlark ring though? I bought it for myself as an early Christmas present for one year at my first full time job. Very surreal how different everything is now compared to a year ago.
Hope this new series is of some interest - should be more exciting than describing my quiet weekend in the least! Back on Wednesday as per usual for a new beauty post. Until then.

The PPL Shall Return on Wednesday
To any of you regular readers waiting for a weekend post unfortunately I don't have one this week. I've had a bit of a tough one and need some time with my best friend eating ice cream. I'm scheduling my usual beauty posts to go ahead on Wednesday and Friday as per usual but I just needed a weekend off.
See you all next weekend.

Weekend Post: Back to the City
After a week trying to fit 46 hours of work into a 40 hour week I was more relieved than usual to get to the weekend. I've not been into the city in several weeks and as mum is going overseas for work soon we thought we'd have a day out. As usual we went to Newmarket which is one of my favourite places in Auckland to shop and have lunch. I had a wee Lush list as a few of my favourite things were getting a bit low, unfortunately my shampoo was only available in the baby or humongous bottles so I guess I have an excuse to go back soon? Anyway, I got one of my favourite body lotions and must have cream cleanser as I'm getting a bit low. Picked up the new Lush Times (or Fresh Matters as it's called now) and got the Christmas gift guide in the post.
After fake tanning like a tanorexic I needed a new tinted moisturiser or foundation - I picked up my much loved Nars Radiant Tinted Moisturiser in Alaska, it suits perfectly and is lovely and yellow so I don't look like I have a yellow body and weirdly pink face hah. I'd been meaning to try the Hourglass Nude Femme lipsticks for a while and I settled on No.4 - my word these are bloody gorgeous. From the packaging and the beautiful satin finish I will definitely be trying a few other shades in this range. I was a bit cheeky and tried the Ambient Lighting palette as well - there were only two left and the price has dropped significantly so I was like hell TREAT YO SELF and bought one. It's the loveliest range of powders - I can say this, tinted moisturiser and something on your brows and lashes gives the most amazing "no makeup"makeup look. I'll definitely need to do a more detailed post on these later. Also bought a pair of draped cargo/harem pants which I have been dreaming of for a while and happened to trip over in Country Road, conveniently they were even 25% off. I'll feature them soon in an outfit post!
Lunch was at my usual tapas bar - I got the tapas platter with slow cooked green beans, chorizo sausage on Spanish baked beans with tomato bread, olives and hummus on the side. I'm hungry just thinking about it. This place is consistently perfect and the service is always excellent.
Finally the piece I was really planning on getting yesterday - I was actually assuming I'd need to order it as my fingers are tiny and each time I've been the jeweler hasn't had the stone/metal combo I've been after. This ring was obviously meant to find its way to my finger - it fits perfectly and is the silver/amethyst combination I was after. It's my treat to myself after a year of finishing university/being at my current job. It was too expensive a piece for me to feel comfortable to ask for for Christmas so I bought it for myself - I've had my eye on this since April.
Today I'm doing the usual frantic photo taking, drafting, editing and the such. My access to a laptop at home is about to disappear so I'm trying to get extra ahead now...!

Weekend Post: Cocktails and Sheep
This weekend dad needed help dagging the sheep, so I helped shift them through the races and separate the lambs from the sheep (we did the lambs last week). It stops the sheep from getting more grubby and helps keep any flies away going into summer.
This was pre-shearing but I'm just pleased with how brown I am after using my Loving Tan Ultra Dark tanning mousse. The photo doesn't do it justice - I think I'll need to do a post on it later on, it's a beautiful product and lasts such a long time.
I posted more on instagram (whee I have instagram) which is linked on the sidebar if you're interested. I wore high waisted Levis jeans, a drapey top, white singlet and Jeffrey Campbells. I had no idea what to do with my makeup so naturally I just went for my usual winged eyeliner and added some xobeauty lashes - the same as what I was wearing the other weekend - called The Flirt.

Weekend Post: Kale Chips + Gardens
Pre-heat the oven to 150 degrees Celsius on bake.
Remove stalks from the kale and place on a baking tray.
Drizzle with olive oil and some garlic salt. Try and keep the leaves as elevated as possible to they can go crispy.
Bake for 8 - 12 minutes or until they go crunchy and delicious.
I also fake tanned with Loving Tan - my legs below turned out pretty well (I haven't washed off the colour guide layer yet) - please ignore the feet. My hands turned out hilariously, I thought I'd done pretty well getting between my fingers but by the time the tan had developed overnight I had ombre little brown paws haha.
Finally this afternoon mum and I went to the local garden centre - I'd wanted to get some more plants to replace the ones that got munched up by accident (I was very sad, they were the only seeds aside from my kale that were still living...). So as I drove in my car, mum paid me back for the gas with plants instead - I was more than happy with that!
I bought a little aloe vera - I'm jumping on the blogging bandwagon with cacti. This little guy in the middle will only get about twice the size he is now so will be perfect for my office. I also chose out a few marigolds as they're very pretty flowers to have in the garden as well as attracting insects away from your veggies. If you have snails and butterflies eating your plants, put some marigolds in, the bugs will eat the marigold leaves instead and the flowers add some real colour to the area - let alone the fact that the bees love them!
Above on the left is a little cactus I plucked from our garden, we have so many of them around at the moment and they sort of just fall out their roots are so small. So, I picked a cute little one with a bit of a root on it and shifted it into its new home. On the right is my aloe which will be coming to work with me tomorrow and the radishes are what I picked from the garden this afternoon - dipped in a little salt and they're delicious.
Lilah is my little "helper" and by this I mean he stares at me while I de-pot and re-plant things. Occasionally he'll follow me around if he's feeling espeicially energetic.
My marigolds planted and some lovely bunches of wild flowers - they were all going a bit mad so I just kept them as they were. This is the pollinator mix, made especially for bees. I love bees and having them in the garden is lovely so hopefully these will grow into some beautiful flowers that help draw more bees to the veggie patch and give the bees something to eat!
For a weekend that seemed like it was going to be pretty quiet it turned out quite nicely - now all I have left to do is bring in my laundry to make my bed and do the vacuuming (sigh).

Weekend Post: Labour Weekend
This week has been absolutely killer, I'm so exhausted at the moment. Yesterday I had some problems that needed to be sorted before I went out so my Saturday plans got a little bit ruined. So to make myself feel better I've just played with my makeup all day and thought I'd share the result with you guys. I used the Naked 3 palette - if you want to see a review I did on this palette you can find it here.
Chronic resting bitch-face (no one chooses to sit next to me on public transport I'll tell ya that for nothing) but I love this makeup look - it's very much a "going out" look for me but I like to practice these first because the stress of trying a new look the night I go out freaks me the hell out. I haven't got any lip colour here but I think I'd just pair it with a nude like my MAC Myth lipstick.
I'm wearing the xobeauty lashes in The Flirt - they're demi lashes and are just the cutest little things - I'm not amazing with application but because these are only half lashes they're super easy to apply and look really natural. Wavy beach hair from yesterday is still sort of there as well.
Now I'm just sitting here blogging, drafting posts for the next few weeks - I have a plan from now until Christmas so I have my work cut out for me...! In the mean time - have my weekly nail - OPI Hot and Spicy with a glitter one I bought last weekend and can't remember the name of right now.
Hope your weekends have/are more eventful than mine...!
